Who Are Romsey Mill?

By Mia Luttik

What is Romsey Mill? Romsey Mill is an organisation that helps young people with various different things. From troubled teens to young parents or even kids that need to waste a few hours after school doing anything and getting out of the house. This article is about how much Romsey Mill do for young people in the community and giving them the recognition that they deserve.

When I first visited Romsey Mill I could see why it is so appealing to young people. They were welcoming and friendly and it really felt like a safe place which is probably why so many people keep coming back and have done in some cases for years. I went into Romsey Mill with an ambition to get a grasp on what this place actually does to these people’s lives.

Romsey Mill focuses on interacting with the children and getting everyone involved in their team building skills. They have great facilities and lots of things for young people to do. They had pool tables, table football, an Xbox, fresh toasties are made by the staff, colouring, ping pong and they have a music programme where the young people had the opportunity to make their own music.

I found one group of young boys aged 14 most interesting. They first intrigued me by the way they spoke about their passion for drill music which lead me to interview two members of the group named Charlie and Elliot. I started off by trying to see the way that Romsey Mill has impacted them personally. They both go to the youth group every week on a Thursday or Friday to take part in different group activities but mainly to fulfill their passion for making music. There is a soundproof music studio where Mark Stanyer (the lead development worker) sets up an Apple Mac computer so they can record and edit their music. By having access to such good facilities it has allowed the boys to progress within themselves. Charlie told me that he “started to listen to music and he wanted to try it out” and without Romsey Mill having the ability to facilitate this he probably wouldn’t have been able to start doing something he speaks so passionately about.

I went onto ask them about the kinds of things that Romsey mill do with them and the others that come to the organisation. I found out that they run different activities for the youth group such as go karting, camping, studio work, one on one sessions and various other things. The work Romsey Mill do for the community has made a big impression on me and I really wanted to know how Charlie and Elliot felt about the way Romsey Mill is advertised. I asked the boys if they have seen how the organisation change over the years and they said that “Romsey Mill has progressed and gotten a lot better over the years” that they have been attending the youth group.

Throughout my whole time doing this article about Romsey Mill I have really found that the work they do for all young people that attend the organisation is truly amazing and has impacted the lives of various young people. The organisation has helped people in various different ways and everyone attends the group for different reasons. “Romsey Mill doesn’t get the recognition it deserves” is a quote from one of the groups of children that I had spoken to and I really felt the impact of their words. The amount of time and effort that Romsey Mill put into working with each individual at the youth group is outstanding and should be appreciated and recognised more within the community.
